When I got pregnant, I could not wait till I was 'showing'. I wanted to wear the bump proudly, take the pregnancy pictures and literarily watch myself grow bigger and bigger each month, because that's what happens right? Well, alhough my bump did get bigger progressively, it never really grew massive. I wasn't doing anything to make it this way, it just was. I was eating as normal and when my appetite grew, I upped my food intake.

I didn't have a large bump and I wasn't too bothered about it, but through my third trimester and closer to my due date, people would exclaim when I told them I was due soon, I then started to wonder if I should worry and more importantly, if everything was ok with my baby - she was. I remember turning up for a pregnancy appointment at, I think it was 34 weeks, and the Nurse looked down at me at reception and said, are you pregnant?

Sometimes the way I dressed seemed to disguise the bump. I tried the body con, bump hugging dresses, but they felt tight and made me feel uncomfortable and itchy. I usually ended up in loose fitting tops paired with fitted trousers. When it got really hot in the summer, I was in loose dresses, but I tried to get them in my true size (or sometimes one size up to fit the bump, depending on the style), so that the fit was right.

Here is a list of my most worn pregnancy outfits. I wasn't too excited about some of the maternity Most of them are suited to the summer because my last months were during that season, but you could easily add tights or leggings, and black boots
to these looks and convert them to comfortable winter outfits.

The pregnancy staple pieces:

1. The T-Shirt dress

I love this H&M UK parisian 'black and white' striped dress. The stripes, coupled with the three-quarter length sleeves, gives this dress a smart casual look which was a brilliant for a day out during pregnancy. When it got a little colder I would add a blazer and tights, with black loafers. Outfit done.

Great alternative: Scuba stripe shirt dress at ASOS.
Fitted version New Look Maternity Bardot striped dress at ASOS.

2. The slightly dressier dress

I wore this dress from Mango UK the day before my birthday, when a few friends and I went to a showing of a film, with a live orchestra. We then went out to dinner. This dress would easily take you from day to night.

Great Alternative: Snake print dress at Mango.  This would make for a great baby shower dress for Mum-to-be.
Short version: TNL floral shift dress at Fashpa.

3. The easy-peasy dress

I reached for this dress from Grey, Lagos on very hot days or when I was feeling bloated and uncomfortable. It's light, but still feels quite modest.

Great alternative: New Look maternity chiffon waisted dress at ASOS

4. The dressy maxi

The only down side to this dress by Phunk Afrique, Lagos (bought at Fashpa.com), is that it does not work for nursing. Otherwise I would have lived in it in my post-partum days too. Light, colourful and playful. I wore it to antenatal class and the teacher said she needed something just like it. It's as comfortable as it looks. It is lined half way as you can see in the picture, but thats not visible when it's on.

Great alternative: Maxi Dress with high neck in bird at ASOS
Or Maxi dress in palm and floral print at ASOS

5. The body con midi skirt

What can I say about this simple black tube skirt number from Topshop. It is very flattering on most shapes, especially with a nice loose top.

Great alternative: Ribbed Body con tube skirt at Topshop
Dressier version: Ponte Solit front tube skirt at Topshop

6. The maternity jeans or leggings

I personally didn't like the maternity band that extends over your tummy on maternity jeans, but that is very much a preference thing. I got this waist banded pair from H&M and they also offer ones that cover the tummy. These jeans made me feel good,  although they were probably not the most comfortable, especially on hot days. When I really could not be bothered to make an effort, I threw them on, and felt put together.

Great alternative: Mama skinny low jeans at H&M
Maternity shape wear leggings at ASOS

What is in your maternity wardrobe that works well for days out? Are you carrying big or small and how do you handle comments from loved ones and strangers on this?

Have a beautiful weekend!
