25 Things I Catch Myself Saying To Pregnant Friends

...that they probably don't want to hear. Applies to first time mums only, though. I just can't help myself.
  1. If your labour is easy and fantastic, like you had a 'I sneezed and baby popped out' birth - don't tell me.
  2. Buy the breast pump in advance, you will need it!
  3. Two words for getting baby to sleep - white noise.
  4. But... all babies are different.
  5. Hormones wrecking havoc does not go away - I am now more weepy and emotional now, than I was during pregnancy.
  6. You just cannot understand these things un till your baby is here.
  7. Goodluck! Haha.
  8. Men/Dads don't get it.
  9. Haemorrhoids or constipation - seems to be, you get either one, post-partum.
  10. Moses basket - let me know how that works out for you.
  11. Your next pregnancy might be different.
  12. Get that Lactulose prescription before you need it.
  13. Imagine being that person that the epidural doesn't work for.
  14. You didn't do the pelvic floor exercises - well, theres always corrective surgery.
  15. My nipples had to tough it out baby did not like the taste of Lanolin (nipple cream)
  16. I can't even think back to that first six weeks period. Tough times ahead.
  17. The not knowing whether you're doing the right thing in the first few days is awful
  18. The many different conflicting ideas from healthcare specialists, well-meaning friends, your mum, other mums. Extremely unhelpful.
  19. You know the breasts you had before you got pregnant, you'll never see them again.
  20. I now weight less than I did before I got pregnant. Breastfeeding is the answer.
  21. Swaddle Swaddle Swaddle.
  22. The labour pain was horrible. Out of this world. Like nothing I could have imagined.
  23. Have I scarred you, with my stories?
  24. Strangers are going to keep talking to you after you've had the baby. This time they will be armed with advice.
  25. You'll see.
Are you that annoying friend too? I say these to be helpful but I think when you're pregnant, especially closer to your due date, sometimes you just wish people would shut up with the advice -helpful or not! By the last trimester I  decided not to read any more books on pregnancy or childbirth. I was just plain fed up of the different stories, I was a bit more nervous and I had finally reached that point of whatever will be, will be - lets do this.

Two mums from instagram that I followed from while they were pregnant just had their babies and have started sharing little tit-bits of their mummy life. It all fills me with so much excitement for them - those first few days however painful/confusing/exhausting, are soooo precious. Wishing you pregnant mums-to-be a safe delivery in due time!

Happy Tuesday

China & Did Coco Just Do An Actual Clap?

Today we went to China. Well, the China exhibition at the V&A museum with my 9 year old cousin, who is visiting from Nigeria with her Mum. I will write a full review as that makes it twice this month that I have been to the V&A, so I've got a bit to share on our experiences.

Three old ladies came up to us at the museum cafe coo-ed, laughed and smiled with us. Only sweet old ladies get away with calling your little bubba 'all gums and no hair'. They get away it with for reasons I will let you fill in the blanks on... (get it?) haha. I had a little pink ribbon in her 'hair' (I use the word lightly) and they thought it was just darling - which is what prompted them to stop for a chat initially.

Before they shuffled off (honestly, one of them, the fancily dressed one, had a zimmer frame), they told me to enjoy this time because they don't stay babies for long. This is the top/most popular advice I get from Mums of older kids. I just say yes , nod and smile. I then try to make an effort to do just that! I really do.

Today Coco did two things for the first time. Like properly:

A wave goodbye (as my cousin and her mum left)

An actual clap (this morning after breakfast at the table)

It was lovely to see. I told my relatives that they brought new skills along with them when they came to visit. Family moments are right up there in the beautiful memories were making as a family. April seems to be family month, as the two-gang above left, my younger sister arrived to stay.

Wishing you joy and a beautiful week!

GoldenTip: Relief for Colic or Reflux - Cranial Osteopathy

When we were going through the colic hard times, which I wrote about here, we went to see a paediatrician. After trying gripe water and infacol with no difference in Baby C's symptoms, the paediatrician offered a number of solutions and one of them was Cranial Osteopathy (CO). I was surprised to hear a medical doctor suggest CO treatment, because it is alternative medicine and there is little or no real evidence that their methods are effective. To be fair, he also made that point, but then added that a number of mums who had brought babies to see him and then visited a CO, reported that their babies' symptoms had eased.

Cranial Osteopathy - for newborns
The idea is that during birth, babies go through a lot of tension and stresses on their head and body. This does not seem like a difficult thing to believe - that the whole birthing experience has some impact on new babies, it's one of the reasons used for why in the first hours babies sleep so much, they're recovering from the birth experience and stimulation of the new world. It's just whether to believe that that recovery process is rougher for some babies to the point where they exhibit colic or reflux symptoms, that I guess a difference of opinion may arise on.

Cranial Osteopathy - what they actually do
Anyway, if you take baby to see the Osteopath, she moves the baby's head and limbs in critical ways, re-aligns their spine and in so doing, releases those tensions from the birthing experience. Mums I know who had their newborns treated said that they noticed a difference such as baby sleeping longer or better or baby seemed to be nursing more etc. No Mum used the word 'cured', but they all saw some improvement or changes, however minor, enough to go back for a second session. And thats typical, usually the Osteopath will ask to see baby 2 or 3 times for a full course of treatment.

Cranial Osteopathy - for us?
I was incredibly curious and tempted to take Coco, but for me, I could not shake this niggly feeling that she was experiencing pain. So I pursued the medical side and kept nagging un till we got a GP referral to see  a Paediatric Gastroenteritis specialists, just to be sure to rule out any serious ailment. She ended up getting a scan which eventually led to a remedy for her. But in the future, I would not hesitate to suggest trying CO if a baby is restless, or not sleeping well or has colic and you have exhausted more mainstream solutions.

How do you feel about Cranial Osteopathy? Would you try it?

Enjoy what's left of the weekend!

Baby Coco's Meals - A Story & A List

Friday evening was an indian takeaway kind of evening. I ordered a spicy lamb jalfrezi, peshwari naan and some poppadoms. What do you have when you order indian?

As soon as I opened the pack, Coco was all over me - she is the most interested in solid food when adults are eating. I eyed the poppadoms but thought better of it. I cut off the non-sweet part of naan and offered her that to mostly suck on and possibly chew. That was all going fine un till she dropped it. Next thing I know, this cheeky girl  lunged forward for my plate, grabbed a handful full of poppadoms and squeezed them into her mouth in seconds. I was shocked...! Haha. I quickly wrestled what was left out of her hands, once I had recovered.

I am now thinking I should pretend to eat food specifically made for her - just serve it all on my plate and chew and see if she flies in and pours it into her mouth with the same enthusiasm. Sadly, when I lovingly prepare a dish and set it in front of her most of it lands on the floor. And she refuses to let me feed her, just closes her mouth if I try, except its food from my plate or Ella's Kitchen puffits. Usually food  I am having is saltier than I would ever make her food, and I am now wondering if she has sussed this out. That food on my plate, is tastier than what I server her? Anyone know what this phenomenon is about? I just do not understand it.

I will get no award for weaning, sometimesI am just lazy and tired. I am a little ashamed to admit it but it's the truth.

I have put details of what I offer and how she responds to some below.

Happy Saturday, hope you're having a good one.
x

Food she likes
Anything I am eating.
Ella's Kitchen Puffits - the one thing that she is guaranteed to eat anytime and anywhere.

New foods she tried
Pasta with pesto and sardines
Jolly rice
Special fried rice
Spaghetti bolognese - she loved this, sadly it was made by my sister so I am not sureI can recreate to such standards.
Tomatoe
Grapes - loves this
I brought banana back into th mix with a lukewarm response
Boiled sweet corn on the cob - loved sucking this
Weetabix - managed it first time and refused thereafter
Plantain - mostly enjoyed
Boiled egg - barely tolerated
Bagel and fried egg
Chicken grilled with spices
Chicken bone - a favourite though I am not sure chewing on this counts as 'eating'

Two Cafes & A Restaurant, South Kensington - Baby Friendly PASS

I initially started out meaning to write a restaurant review every time I went out to eat with Baby Coco. Over time I have realised that what I really care to to know is where I should go for good service with a baby in a buggy. Every time I experience that, I would like to write about the restaurant and tell you why it was good!

Le Pain Quotidien

Day I went: One cold, wet and windy Sunday in January, I was already out and now on my way home and decided to stop at the very busy LPQ in South Kensington. It was bursting with people and even more turned up as I stood outside the door realising that there was no chance I was going to fit into the restaurant myself, let alone with my buggy 'the monstrosity', as I like to call it.

What I wanted: A scone and a tea.

What I had: A scone and mint tea.

Why service was good: I had one hand on my buggy, stuck my face in and the sweetest lady actually came to me, still behind the till and asked for my order. Just like that, I gave it to her, she went back got everything organised, then came back with the the little card reader to take my payment. Technically Baby Coco was outside and I was inside, holding on to the buggy with one hand. The lady who took my order had come to my corner which was on the other side of the till, just to attend to me. At one point another staff member came up and looked at what was going on in confusion. In any case, my scone and tea was ready, and handed over to me and off I went with it, after thanking the lady profusely.

Summary: No silly questions, no funny looks, no judgement from the staff, just diligent, kind and very friendly service at a time when I needed it the most. So this is dedicated to Le Pain Quotidian, South Kensington. I cant vouch for all the staff but the lady who served me was awesome, that 'desperate-for-a-hot-drink-and-bite' sunday afternoon.

Healthy Cafe

(I do not remember the name. It is a healthy food cafe right next door on the left to the Creperie on exhibition road. Once I find the name, I will update this.)
Day I went: One late afternoon in March.

What I wanted: Light lunch, possibly a soup.

What I had: Toasted avocado on sour dough with a side salad and a mint tea

Why service was good: Staff were helpful and friendly. They were happy to accommodate me and Coco in the pram. It is a very small cafe, but they even let me pick my table.

Facilities: No high chair (yet, they did say they would be getting some).

Summary: One of ladies, in particular, helped clear the way as I tried to get out while pushing the pram and then insisted on holding the doors open as I went down on step back unto the streets.

Bo Lang

 I went: Last weekend.

What I wanted: Dim sum, but really good food, most of all.

What I had: Lobster soup, a selection of dim sum, sorbet and ice-cream for dessert.

Why service was good: All the staff were exceptionally friendly to us. They were happy to accommodate two of us with a pram when we made the reservation and were extremely polite, professional and then friendly when we came in.

Facilities: No high chair or baby changing facilities. We used the buggy Stokke xPlory, as a high chair for the first time and it worked well.

Summary:  Although it is not really designed to be baby friendly, the exceptionally friendly and professional staff who you feel welcome and offer a great service even if you turn up with baby. Also really good food.

If you know of other baby friendly restaurants or cafes in the area, please share below - we are always on the look out for new places to try.

Happy Friday

Ergo 360 Baby Carrier/Sling Review

When it comes to choosing a baby carrier or sling, you are spoilt for choice as there are quite a few different kinds. Soft structured ones, wraps, mei tais (for waist tying), even the good ole african 'backing' style done using a soft, usually print, rectangular shaped fabric.

But I usually think of them as being either of the two types: the ergonomic carriers or the soft cloth slings. The ergonomic ones are designed specifically to support the carrier/adult's back, as well as making sure baby is in a proper position, so that their developing hips and spine are aligned and held in correctly. I went for one of those - the Ergo carrier, because they have a great reputation for comfort. I chose the 360 model because this was new (in 2014) and the only carrier designed by the brand that allows baby to be carried facing outward. I thought it would be nice to have the option, though I didn't know whether we would need outward facing direction or not. It allows you to carry baby in three other positions - back, hip (or side), and front.

I went with a cream and grey coloured carrier- black wasn't in stock yet. I also bought the infant insert, so I could use it with baby from day 1. You can use the carrier without the insert, from when baby weights 5.5kg - and for us that was when Coco was about three months old. If your baby weighs close to that at birth, you could probably skip the infant carrier.

Both are available on Amazon here.

Pros:

  • Baby is comfortable and I am too.
  • I love that I can have her facing outward while she's awake and if she falls asleep I can swap her to facing inward, where her neck will be better supported. I can do this while I am out - I once had to at a supermarket and managed it no problem.
  • Once you use it a handful of times, its quite easy to get baby in it.
  • I love the velcro strap for ease of use.
  • It's washable.
  • You can buy teething pads to attach to it - I keep meaning to, because at the moment she sucks the top fabric.
  • Longevity - you can use this still baby weights 15kg.

Cons:

  • The velcro strap at the bottom is noisy. This is a problem for taking it off if baby is asleep (I usually go to another room) or taking it off in public (such as during a church service - I've had that problem).
  • Using the infant insert makes baby quite warm. This is great for winter (baby won't need a snowsuit) but in the summer it will likely be too hot. Ideally the manufacturers should have made it so the infant carrier, is designed for summer and adaptable for winter.
  • This isn't really a con. Yes, the carrier is comfortable, but you're still carrying a weighty bundle of baby. I don't know why I expected ergonomic to mean baby becomes light as a feather - thats not the case. The weight is evenly distributed and supports your back though.
  • The reviews I read mentioned that older models had a pocket and that was missed on this model. I would agree that pockets would have been great, but this is nitpicking in my case.
  • I would have liked for the design to incorporate a fold-away design. This would be great for when you use a buggy, but take along the carrier as well. Or even for just storing away nicely in your home.

I have gotten a lot of use out of this carrier. There were nights I slept in it, because I used it till Coco fell asleep, moved her out and then didn't want to remove the velcro, in case the noise disturbed her. Plus I knew if she woke up again, I could just put her back in the carrier. Those were the colic days, when putting her close to me and then walking around comforted her, when all else failed.

I would say that I have used it more at home than outdoors. I have found it to be a perfect soother for Baby C and even now it comes in handy for when she is fussing at night. During the day, I might have her in it while I cook - which she enjoys watching.

Overall I would give this 4/5. Superb quality that has stood the test of time and considerable use.

Do you have a baby carrier that you would recommend? Did you find the baby wraps worked better for you?I would love to hear.

Happy Thursday
