As a mummy-to-be, trying to sift through the baby products on the market to decide which ones you need, can quickly leave you feeling overwhelmed, I know I was. There are some big buys (the pram, being the biggest), and the basic items (diapers, baby clothes), but, for me, the tougher buys were the million other products in between.
Every Mum's list will be different based on lifestyle, home arrangement and personal preferences, but these are the items I have found make things easy. I have not included the bigs (prams) or the basics (clothes) to this list, but I could write up a separate posts on those if anyone is interested. These are products that I would go out of my way to recommend to all new mums because they have more than proved their worth in the number of uses I have gotten out of them over time.
1. Baroo Nursing Pillow
I took this into hospital and used it while in labour. It was my constant companion in the first weeks while I was learning to breastfeed and baby Coco was very small. Now I still use it for putting the baby upright for a short while, after a feed. Once she outgrows it, I plan to keep using it in my bed. It's a really comfortable pillow and the cover is washable too.

This came up on a few 'new born must have' lists online, so I thought there must be something to it. I decided to try one. I knew from the first week I loved it and went back online for more. They are large, breathable and get softer with each wash. This one will be used through toddler years, and for subsequent kids. It works as a breastfeeding cover, burp cloth, shield baby's yes from the sun when they are in the pram etc. Some many functions and sustainability factor too, that is how I justify the price. prince George was wrapped in one of these on his way home from hospital - if you're looking for that bonus royalty factor ;).

3. Blankets
I get through a lot of these because of the convenience factor. I'll usually have one on the sofa, in the changing bag, two by the bed - a light one and a slightly warmer one, for regulating her temperature through the night, etc. You can vary the styles: I have two knitted ones that we got as gifts, a cotton baby gap one, the cotton muslins and two thicker ones. You use them for keeping baby up, mopping up spills or posset or dribble during teething. Use them for laying down on the carpet or wherever else before you lay baby down. Why cellular blankets - they regulate baby's temperature based on the temperature of the room or environment. That means a reduced danger of baby being too warm -which is a SIDs risk or too cold.

I wanted a small bag for all our diaper change essentials, since I did not actually buy a purpose built baby bag - I just use large totes that I owned already and/or the bag at the bottom of my the stoke xplory pram. I liked the look of the skip hop pronto bag and it has great reviews. It has zipper compartments for diaper, wipes, nappy bag etc. You can hook it to the pram directly or store it in your baby bag. They come in a few colours with slight variations on the price, the grey and white chevron is beautiful, but tough to track down. I'm not 100% sold on the price of these, but the cheaper alternatives had mixed reviews. Its great for taking into the changing room, without having to carry a large baby bag.

The title says it all. Some whole days were spent in these, in the early postpartum days,
and even now, haha. Also brilliant for throwing on when your buzzer goes off and you've still got your pyjamas on (makes you look like you were just about to shower and get it all together). You can get them from most big retailers and decide if you want to splurge or go frugal on the purchase.

I had been eyeing the Ardo Calypso which had great reviews on several websites, but I could not find where I could buy it in store, as opposed to online, when I desperately had to get a breast pump on day 5 (engorged boobs). I got the Medela Swing which works fantastic and I didn't find it to be as noisy as the reviews said.

Baby Coco will happily sit and play in the basic mamas & papas bouncer. She loves batting the toys and kicks her leg so it bounces without my having to do it. I get about 20 minutes quiet time while she's in this. If I tap it with my feet to get it to bounce, she does fall asleep but once I stop, she wakes up. When she was 2months old we got a pricier modern rocker - the mamaroo, in hopes she would fall asleep in it (she was colicky and would sometimes only sleep well in our arms). Sadly, she's not very keen on it.

My little one is a light sleeper so during the day when she's asleep I shut the door behind her and put the video monitor on. I use the motorola MBP36. It has got a great night vision, a large screen and good sound and you can even talk or sing to the baby from another room if they're squirmy. I have had to send for a new plug because the first one broke but the replacement is working fine. The battery life is also pretty short on these but I just keep it plugged the whole time. I like the sound of the Angel baby monitor soon which has a sensor that monitors your baby movements, but I then again I do have a very wriggly baby so I don't worry that she's being too quiet.

I had gotten a beige and cream stroller toy that basically gets ignored and I have now packed away. I got the lamaze toy as part of a gift pack from my dear friend and I was amazed by how much Coco loves it. She smiles and will sometimes coo and babble to it. They're so bright and colourful but that's the attraction I think. We have the My friend Emily.

JacquesI got some items during the summer sale, or during online sales. You could check in every so often on your favourite websites, in the run up to your baby's arrival. A friend of mine found her pram at the baby show in London - so don't rule those out either for great bargains or a chance to feel and examine some products on your 'maybe' list.
Hope this is helpful. What worked for you and what surprisingly didn't? I would love it if you shared in the comments below.
