Golden Tip - Abidec vitamins A, C & D

According to the department of health, breastfed babies should be given a vitamin supplement for A, C and D once they reach 6 months. You may have already gotten the Healthy Start vitamin drops, from your Health Visitor (if you live in the UK), and could use that, but I would recommend Abidec - which is what we use. It comes with a syringe that allows you to measure very easily the dosage, whereas Healthy Start needs to be tipped over and then tapped an exact number of times (but no more than), to get droplets into babies mouth, which I found to be a bit of a faff with a new baby.

We started Abidec early, since Coco was a few weeks old (on medical advice), and I think this was for the vitamin D primarily. Our principle source of vitamin D is the sun, but because we wrap babies up in the winter, and there is generally a lack of sunshine in winter anyway, the vitamin D supplement ensures baby gets this vitamin.

Babies are more prone to a vitamin D deficiency if they are:
  • Breastfed
  • Dark skinned
  • Mum does not get much vitamin D
source

For formula-fed babies, vitamins should be given once they are having less than 500ml formula a day, as formula is already vitamin fortified.

As with anything health/medicine related, check with your health visitor or GP.

Happy Sunday
