GoldenTip: Relief for Colic or Reflux - Cranial Osteopathy

GoldenTip: Relief for Colic or Reflux - Cranial Osteopathy

When we were going through the colic hard times, which I wrote about here, we went to see a paediatrician. After trying gripe water and infacol with no difference in Baby C's symptoms, the paediatrician offered a number of solutions and one of them was Cranial Osteopathy (CO). I was surprised to hear a medical doctor suggest CO treatment, because it is alternative medicine and there is little or no real evidence that their methods are effective. To be fair, he also made that point, but then added that a number of mums who had brought babies to see him and then visited a CO, reported that their babies' symptoms had eased.

Cranial Osteopathy - for newborns
The idea is that during birth, babies go through a lot of tension and stresses on their head and body. This does not seem like a difficult thing to believe - that the whole birthing experience has some impact on new babies, it's one of the reasons used for why in the first hours babies sleep so much, they're recovering from the birth experience and stimulation of the new world. It's just whether to believe that that recovery process is rougher for some babies to the point where they exhibit colic or reflux symptoms, that I guess a difference of opinion may arise on.

Cranial Osteopathy - what they actually do
Anyway, if you take baby to see the Osteopath, she moves the baby's head and limbs in critical ways, re-aligns their spine and in so doing, releases those tensions from the birthing experience. Mums I know who had their newborns treated said that they noticed a difference such as baby sleeping longer or better or baby seemed to be nursing more etc. No Mum used the word 'cured', but they all saw some improvement or changes, however minor, enough to go back for a second session. And thats typical, usually the Osteopath will ask to see baby 2 or 3 times for a full course of treatment.

Cranial Osteopathy - for us?
I was incredibly curious and tempted to take Coco, but for me, I could not shake this niggly feeling that she was experiencing pain. So I pursued the medical side and kept nagging un till we got a GP referral to see  a Paediatric Gastroenteritis specialists, just to be sure to rule out any serious ailment. She ended up getting a scan which eventually led to a remedy for her. But in the future, I would not hesitate to suggest trying CO if a baby is restless, or not sleeping well or has colic and you have exhausted more mainstream solutions.

How do you feel about Cranial Osteopathy? Would you try it?

Enjoy what's left of the weekend!
