Ten Surprising Facts About Newborns - My Experience

Well, we had a GIRL. Here what I noticed about her in her first few weeks.

They are noisy
With Coco, we had: a heavy breathing noise, farting noises, noises while she was stretching, noises for when she was waking up and a whole host of other noises. I hadn't realised that newborns could make so many different and interesting sounds.

They have a personality
From when Coco was little, we could already tell what her temperament was like. For example, when she was done eating she was done, and you couldn't force her to eat. At six weeks, I wrote down that 'she has her preferences and makes them known' and this is still so very true of her.

They're quite interesting to observe
I've heard people say newborns are boring, but I really did not find that at all with my little girl. I have not found any newborns boring to be honest. Most babies respond to music from very early on. The respond to their Mums too or bath time (she loved it). Coco's reaction was to stare right at you and she would often quieten down too, if she was crying, by you singing her a song.

They're the most beautiful thing to you (mum)
I remember just looking at her little face then, and I thought she was just so beautiful.  I still do. It made no difference that was, wrinkly and newborn looking - I saw so much beauty.

They can be hairy
Especially if they're born before their due date. Coco was born with quite a bit of hair on her shoulders and face. It faded with time! I'm not sure I noticed that happening, one day I looked and it was all gone.

Safest temperature for baby is a bit cold
It's actually recommended to keep the room between 16 and 20 degrees Celsius. I struggled with this and it took baby Coco getting a heat rash on her back for me to force myself to be better at regulating her temperature. I achieved that by putting fewer layers of clothing on her.

It's a shame to wait till that happens though. Get a thermometer and use that as a guide. I found that at night during summer, she only needed a babygro (sleep suit/onesie), with no body suit/vest underneath and a large muslin blanket from aden & anais folded in two. For winter, I used two muslins or one slightly warmer cotton blanket, instead. Your baby being too warm is also a SIDs risk - just in case you have to pull that excuse out for anyone insisting on you wrapping baby up!

They do not need a hat/cap on when they are indoors
I used to believe that babies got cold very easily and needed to be wrapped up warmer than everyone. Not true. A good guide is to put only one extra layer on baby than you have on. So if you have a t-shirt and leggings on, baby only needs a babygro (long sleeved with feet covered) and a blanket - the blanket being the extra layer. If you're going outside and it's chilly, then you can put baby in a hat. When you get back indoors, take baby's hat off.

Cold hands or feet do not mean baby is cold
Best place to check baby's temperature is their chest or their stomach. If it feels warm then they are ok. If it feels cold, than it is more likely that baby is cold.

Sneezing does not mean baby is cold
Newborns apparently sneeze a lot and the nurses at the hospital when we had her, told us that it's their bodies clearing out their airways and is perfectly normal. It does not necessarily mean baby is cold.

They do smile!
I don't care what anyone says, that early smile was indeed a smile and not wind. Coco smiled from day two and I am convinced she knew exactly what she was doing. It's the exact same smile I see these days.

What are you finding surprising about your newborn?

Have a beautiful Monday
x
